For all that it’s incredibly corny by 21st century standards, it’s still pleasing and satisfying to those in its target audience–generally girls and people who remember being girls.
I’ve read it and listened to the excellent audiobook version many times. It’s been in print since 1905, and has been adapted to multiple movies and stage plays. The novel A Little Princess is one of my favorites. It was only Cuaron’s second film, and his first in English, for a Hollywood studio. The film we watched this week is the 1995 adaptation written by Richard La Gravenese and directed by Alfonso Cuaron.
